I have been to\u2026any guesses?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, it is not North Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Media terms it as \u201cNorth Korea\u201d of Africa (that\u2019s a clue).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I have been there but I do not subscribe to this tag. I love this country, and would love to take you there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the East African country of <a href=\"https:\/\/turuhi.com\/resources\/how-to-travel-to-eritrea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ERITREA<\/a>, the \u201cHorn of Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was an achievement to get my <a href=\"https:\/\/turuhi.com\/resources\/visa-for-eritrea-is-it-difficult-to-get-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eritrean visa<\/a> in just 45 days! Yes, just 45 days, because usually it takes 2-3 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eritrean telecom operator does not have a tie-up with any other telecom operators in the world. Hence, international phones do not connect to the local network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They do not issue SIM cards to tourists. EriTel has barred outgoing calls and text messages to foreign countries. You cannot make calls\/text out of the country, even if you manage to get a local SIM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EriTel does not have mobile data connectivity. There is no satellite Internet in Eritrea either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Internet is LICENSED and through dial-up modems, like the 1990s! Obviously, the speed is extremely slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internet is only available in the lobby of major hotels, but again it is too slow. <a href=\"https:\/\/turuhi.com\/resources\/stay-in-eritrea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Airbnbs in Eritrea<\/a> do not have Internet because they do not grant a license to the households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After paying $1 for an hour at an authorized cyber caf\u00e9, I could hardly upload one picture for the entire hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was pretty much cut-off from the rest of the world during my 8-day trip, SCARY right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I went into digital detox and had ME TIME for 8 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BTW, need cash? You need to visit a bank. No ATMs here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This beautiful land and its rich Italian and Arabic influence turns the clock backwards by a century, if not more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absolutely safe for tourists, <a href=\"https:\/\/turuhi.com\/story\/now-we-fly-to-asmara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eritrea is an offbeat destination<\/a> that debunks many myths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/turuhi.com\/story\/now-we-fly-to-asmara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more <\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever traveled to a country without phone connectivity, Internet, and even bank ATMs?
