Dolphins are one of the most beloved creatures on Earth. They are playful, intelligent, and full of personality. Swimming with wild dolphins in the ocean is a unique experience that not many people get to enjoy. During my family trip to Perth, Australia, I got an opportunity to swim with wild dolphins in their natural environment. It was an experience I will never forget.
Dolphins are social creatures, and they will often approach swimmers to play and socialize. They are curious by nature, and they will investigate you just as much as you investigate them. There is a natural dolphin habitat in the ocean near Rockingham in Western Australia. These dolphins are used to humans. This means that they are not afraid to approach swimmers, and they will often interact with them.
Getting up close and personal with dolphins
It was early morning, and the sun was just peeking over the horizon as our boat reached out into the open water. I stood for a while on the deck, enjoying the peaceful solitude, when suddenly something caught my eye. A pod of dolphins was swimming just 20 meters away, and as I watched, they began to swim closer. Soon they were right alongside us, gamboling and leaping through the water.
There’s something special about being in the water with these intelligent, playful creatures. They seem to sense your joy and excitement as they often swam right alongside us, gently nudging us with their noses. It’s as if they’re trying to share in our happiness. Being in the water with dolphins is also a chance to reconnect with nature. As we watched them gracefully jump through the waves and swim around us, we felt at peace with the world. We were inches away from them as they did loops and spins close to us.
The experience of swimming with wild dolphins
Being in the water with wild dolphins is like they’re inviting you to join in their games. Every encounter is different, but each one is special in its own way. It’s not just the chance to get up close and personal with these amazing creatures – it’s the sense of adventure, of being completely in harmony with nature. As it was the first time I saw dolphins in the wild, an experience I will never forget.
We put on our wetsuits and snorkel masks and waited for our guide to give us instructions on diving into the water. We were in a group of 6 people lead by a guide with an aqua scooter to tow us right among the dolphin and try to match their speed. Initially, I froze, not knowing whether to be scared or excited. As the dolphin surfaced, I could see its friendly eyes looking at me, and I knew that I was in for an unforgettable experience. Over the next few minutes, we swam with that dolphin and its family, playing and riding the waves together. They too were having as much fun as us. It was an experience that I’ll never forget – and one that I can’t wait to repeat.
Whether it is safe
Whenever you are in the ocean, surrounded by vast amounts of water, there is always the possibility of an unexpected encounter with a large animal. This is especially true if that animal is a shark. As a result, crews wear shark shields. The device creates an electric field that causes the sharks’ sensory receptors to experience unbearable discomfort, forcing them to flee the area. By wearing shark shields, crews can feel safer and more comfortable while working in areas where sharks are present.
DOs and DON’Ts
- DO keep stock of appropriate medicines to avoid seasickness
- DO take some prior snorkeling lessons – it will help though it is not a must
- DO inform your guide if you are not a good swimmer – they can very well manage you and give you the best possible experience
- DON’T touch the dolphins and other wild animals – you may transmit skin diseases or damager their skins
- DON’T feed the dolphins – it may increase the mortality rate and decrease reproductive success
- DON’T branch out of your group and snorkel on your own
Conclusion
Swimming with wild dolphins is an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life. It was a unique and amazing experience that reconnected me with nature and left me with memories that will last a lifetime. It was amazing to be so close to these beautiful creatures and to feel their energy. So, if you ever find yourself in Perth, Australia, be sure to add this activity to your list.
